Jack And The Beanstalk begins its run at Palace Theatre

The adventure has begun for the cast of Jack And The Beanstalk, the Christmas pantomime at the Palace Theatre, Newark, which launched yesterday (Wednesday).

The show, which will run until Saturday, December 31, stars former Eastenders favourite Todd Carty, better known as Mark Fowler in the TV show and Tucker Jenkins in Grange Hill.

Todd, who will play the baddie, Fleshcreep, said he was looking forward to spending his first festive season in Newark.

“Panto baddies are fun to play as the audience just loves to be able to join in and boo,” he said.

“It is wonderfully ironic that the better you do your job, the more you get booed.”

Fleshcreep is the henchman of the evil Giant Blunderbore in the classic tale of good versus evil.

While the giant destroys the village of Merrydale, Fleshcreep steals its magic harp and kidnaps the beautiful Princess Tamara.

The story follows Jack, his mother, Dame Trot, and his brother, Simon, on their farm. Their friendly cow, Daisy, has gone dry and they haven’t a bean to their name, but can they save the day?

Last year, Cinderella broke box office records at the Palace and Imagine Theatre has returned to stage this year’s spectacular panto.

It promises to be a giant production, according to the theatre’s audience development manager, Harriet Wright.

“Cinderella was the classic fairytale, but this is far more of an adventure,” she said. “The giant is the wow factor this year — but I’m not going to give too much away.”

The festive show features Kevin McGreevy, who has returned to the Palace as Simple Simon after last year’s successful run as Buttons; Felicity Skiera as Jack; Tim Freeman as Dame Trot; and Ann Micklethwaite as the Queen of the Flower Fairies.

Kevin said: “I love panto because it sums up Christmas.”

Felicity, who played Jack in Leamington Spa in 2015, said: “Jack is a really fun character as he is quite feisty.

“The giant used in the show is brilliant and always produces big gasps from the audience when he appears, so the scene where I get to fight him is excellent.”
