Still proving they are the champions of the world
Friday 8th March, 2013 - Palace Theatre, Newark
My ideal gig would be Queen’s famous concert at Wembley in 1986, but given this performance took place four years before I was born, I was content to eagerly snapping up tickets for tribute band Mercury at Newark’s Palace Theatre.

A packed audience turned out to see lead singer Joseph Lee Jackson (Freddie Mercury) lead guitarist Glenn Scrimshaw (Brian May) drummer Pat Coleman (Roger Taylor) bass guitarist Steve Humphreys (John Deacon) and pianist Lee Harvey (Spike Edney) perform a range of Queen’s greatest hits.

Dressed in a classic outfit of a white jacket, T-shirt and trousers, Joseph, 37, of Newark, dominated the stage as he warmed up the audience with a medley of songs that included Flash and Under Pressure.

He had all of Freddie’s stage presence and conviction.

He even introduced comedy to the act when he performed I Want To Break Free in drag, complete with wig, fake breasts and vacuum cleaner, as in the famous music video.

The band rounded off the first half of the performance in style with Don’t Stop Me Now and an atmospheric rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Joseph and his bandmates ramped it up a notch after the interval with powerful performances of Who Wants To Live Forever and I Want It All — perfectly illustrating Joseph’s impressive vocal range.

Everyone was up on their feet dancing by the time hits such as A Kind of Magic and Radio Ga Ga were performed.

Glenn shone with an impressive acoustic performance of Love Of My Life and had us all rocking to the famous guitar solo at the end of We Will Rock You.

The audience waved their arms as Mercury performed their encore piece of We Are The Champions — DP.
