Young actors prepare to take centre stage roles in Oliver!
Newark Amateur Operatic Society
Tommy-Lee Storr (Artful Dodger) left, and Jack Trippett (Oliver).
Preparations are under way for Newark Amateur Operatic Society’s 2017 production, which will be Oliver! It will be performed at the Palace Theatre, Newark, from March 28 to April 1.

It will be the fourth time the society has selected the award-winning show, which is based on Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart.

It features classic songs including Oliver! Consider Yourself, You’ve Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two and Oom-Pah-Pah.

Sam Barnard and Jack Trippett have been cast to play Oliver.

Jack was in last year’s production of South Pacific and said he was enjoying the rehearsals.

“I love starring in the show as Oliver,” he said.

It is the first time Sam has been involved in one of the society’s productions.

“Everybody’s really friendly and the atmosphere is great,” he said.

“It’s great to be playing such a big role.”

Two boys will also share the role of Artful Dodger — Tommy-Lee Storr and Cody Harrison, who are both new faces for the society.

Tommy-Lee already knows the show well after playing Fagin at Chuter Ede Primary School, Balderton, earlier this year.

“It’s great fun doing this show and meeting new people,” he said.

Cody said he loved acting and singing.

“It’s great being Dodger and it’s amazing rehearsing with everyone,” he said.

Other cast members include Justin Day as Fagin, Jo Dewberry as Nancy and Lyndon Warnsby as Bill Sykes.

The show will be directed by Mike Follen, who played Bill Sykes when the society last put on the show 12 years ago.

The musical director is Andy Raine and choreography will be by Natasha Logan who joined the society for the recent production of Rent, which Mike also directed.

The society’s chairman Mrs Rita Crowe said Oliver! was an all-time favourite for them and tickets were already selling well for all performances.

“This show has something for everyone with some iconic songs,” she said.

“We look forward to welcoming friends old and new to the theatre to see this fantastic show.”

Tickets are available from the society box office on 01636 702055, from the Palace Theatre, Newark, or by visiting www.palacenewarktickets.com

Prices range from £16 for adults to £56 for a family ticket, which includes two adults and two under 16s.

Seats on the back three rows of the circle are £13.
