A bank customer service manager stole £12,000 from cashpoint machines at the branch where he worked, Lincoln Crown Court was told on Tuesday.
Jason Thurlby, 25, of Manners Road, Balderton, admitted theft from the Halifax in Grantham.

He was sentenced to a year in prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work.

A further hearing will take place to decide on the confiscation of his assets.

Mr Phil Howes, prosecuting, said Thurlby carried out the thefts while refilling the machines, despite being accompanied by at least one colleague and being monitored by CCTV.

Thurlby was caught in June last year when a colleague spotted him concealing notes while filling one of the machines.

The matter was reported to management and Thurlby was spoken to the following day.

Checks revealed a number of shortfalls when he was involved in refilling the machines.

Thurlby was suspended by the bank and initially tried to claim a device had been placed over the machine that allowed money to be taken out.

He later changed his story and, after first admitting to taking £200, he confessed he had been stealing cash for a year.

Mr Howes said: “He said he was using the money to live off. He was taking about £1,000 a month.”

Mr Stephen Kemp, defending, said Thurlby was ashamed of what he had done.

He said Thurlby was already in debt before becoming a father and was struggling to pay his mortgage.

“Having heard about the ATMs not balancing, he took the opportunity, foolishly, to take advantage of that situation,” said Mr Kemp.

“It was inevitable that sooner or later it would be discovered.”
