A former tribunal judge and her husband have been jailed for six months each after forging a will which enabled them to take over properties that they converted into a cottage.
Margaret Avis Hampshire, 69, and Alan Royce Hampshire, 67, pleaded guilty to forging the will of Martin Blanche, who died in February 2007.

The pair, originally from Wickham Bishops, Essex, wanted Mr Blanche’s estate, which mainly comprised property in Rolleston, including Middle Corner House and a share of End Corner House.

After forging the will, Margaret Hampshire made a false statement on oath that the will of Mr Blanche was a true and original document.

The will transferred his estate to Margaret Hampshire’s cousin, Josephine Burroughs. There is no evidence to suggest that Josephine Burroughs knew the will was a forgery. She died on January 22, 2014, before the start of the police investigation.

Margaret Hampshire held a power of attorney for Josephine Burroughs, and transferred both Middle Corner House and End Corner House to her own daughter. She also created a forged document which she kept at home as a means to avoid any possible inheritance tax.

Although the properties were transferred to their daughter, the Hampshires converted the two properties into one home, named Wheatsheaf Cottage.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday, Margaret Hampshire pleaded guilty to fraud and two counts of forgery.

Alan Hampshire pleaded guilty to forgery and two counts of theft, which included stealing £23,176 from Josephine Burroughs during 2012, money that was used to pay for renovation works on the cottage.
