Shops to share £3,000 to encourage custom

A scheme that aims to get people to support their local shops is to receive up to £3,000 in district council support.
The money will go towards the development of Totally Locally in Newark, Southwell and Edwinstowe.

About 30 businesses are involved in the Newark scheme, and work together to encourage residents and visitors to use independent businesses.

It wants to establish a community interest company to promote it.

The schemes in Southwell and Edwinstowe are at an earlier stage and the money would help them to get established.

Newark and Sherwood District Council’s economic development committee supported the scheme but members said town and parish councils should contribute as well.

Rather than support the initial recommendation to give a total of £4,000 in grants, the committee decided to give up to a maximum of £3,000.

That is subject to detailed costings and town and parish council contributions.

Mr Roger Blaney said: “I support the campaign, which is a very good initiative by independent retailers.

“My only slight concern is that we don’t just hand over £3,000 when we don’t have the money to do that.”

Mrs Maureen Dobson said: “Why aren’t town and parish council’s involved in this? Could they not find some money in their budgets to help?”

Mr Peter Duncan said Newark Town Council had been approached about the scheme.
