First chance to impress head coach
1:34pm Thu Jun 27, 2013
New head coach Nathan Smith will take his first session at Newark Rugby Club when the squad return for their first pre-season training session next week.
Smith, who was appointed first-team coach after Bob Nashed stepped down at the end of last season, will speak to the players and coaches for around 30 minutes in the clubhouse on Tuesday to outline his plans for the 2013-14 season.

He will hold his first training session straight afterwards. It should start at around 7pm.

The club is keen to welcome any new players who would like to try out for one of its four senior teams, and all under-17s and under-18s are also free to attend training sessions.

Newark, who escaped relegation on a nail-biting final day of last season, have a tough start to the new campaign when they travel to Ilkeston on September 7.

They then host Kettering on September 14 in what will be their first league game of the season at Kelham Road.

The club are asking members to vote on whether they should refurbish or rebuild their clubhouse, and have set up a survey to gauge opinions and ideas.

A working party set up by club representatives has explored several options of what to do with the clubhouse, and they have concluded that it should either be refurbished or rebuilt.

Nearly 100 people have voted so far, and people can have their say by completing the survey online at http://www.surveymon

Andrew Muter, chief executive of Newark and Sherwood District Council, has written to Sport England in support of a bid submitted by the club for funding towards the clubhouse project.
