Howlett, of Farndon, who trains at Fernwood Sword Club and A&C Sword Club in Nottingham, went into the Leon Paul Junior Series Robin Hood Foil competition in Mansfield as the current series leader in the under-15 boys foil.

He was beaten by the in-form Rutherford, of A&C Sword Club, 4-2 in a poule match before going on to beat Sebastian Monnet, of Salle Boston, London, 4-3 on priority.

Rutherford dropped a match to Monnet but, following comfortable wins in their earlier knockout matches, he and Howlett were drawn against each other in the semi-finals.

It was 7-7 going into the last three- minute period when Howlett pounced to make it 8-7 and then picked off Rutherford as he was forced to attack, making it 10-7 at full-time.

Howlett met Monnet again in the final, with leadership of the series at stake. Howlett stormed into a four- point lead, counter-attacking with skill. He led 14-8 at the end of the three minute first period, and eventually sealed a 15-9 win to clinch gold.

Fernwood Sword Club’s Luke Rutherford, James’s younger brother, finished 11th in the under-13 boys foil.
