Boxer Jamie Williams is looking to set up a massive year with victory at Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre, Nottingham, next month.
The Midlands Area flyweight champion is aiming to claim the British Challenge Belt with victory over Conar Blackshaw on March 11.

Williams, 25, of Edwinstowe, goes into the eight round contest with only Andrew Selby and Charlie Edwards above him in the British rankings.

“I am looking for big titles this year. My dad fought for the British title and that has always been my target,” Williams said.

“2017 could be the year that happens. I have been working hard and making sacrifices all my life — and it’s all been leading up to this year.

“I would love to test myself against Selby and Edwards.

“They are the top two in Britain, but are world class fighters and probably looking to move on. If they vacate the British and English titles, I will be in a good position if I beat Conar.”

Williams and Blackshaw know each other well as they have shared a pair of amateur bouts and have sparred since turning professional.

“This is a massive chance for him and he’s going to give it a real go,” said Williams.

“I want to prove I’m worthy of my ranking and if I bring my A-game, he won’t get near me.”

Williams says boxing at Harvey Hadden is a boyhood dream come true.

“I have been working there since I was 17,” he said. “I remember putting out the chairs when Rendall Munroe was boxing there and I used to think: ‘If I ever turn professional, I want to box here.’

“Now it’s happening and I should have a big crowd there supporting me and that’s going to bring out the best in me.”

The show at the Harvey Hadden centre also features Newark boxers Nathan McIntosh, Adam Kettleborough and Jake Sharp.

Sam Bowen will fight Chris Cornwell for the vacant English super-featherweight championship.
