Manager seeks confidence boost

Manager Tony Joynes says he needs to restore his players’ confidence as Newark Town look to end their recent slump that has seen them lose top spot to Sutton Town.
The Blues have lost their last two games, at Sutton and South Normanton, and Joynes knows his team needs to bounce back quickly to stay with the leaders.

“We worked hard to get to the top of the table and then to be knocked off again is very disappointing,” Joynes said.

“Some of the lads are a little bit down at the moment. What I need to do now is to restore confidence back in the players, and to get them to enjoy playing their football again.”

Town’s recent run of bad form has coincided with an injury to captain Ricky Brewer, but Joynes believes that is not the only reason for their poor performances.

He said: “We do miss Ricky, but we have got enough quality to keep going without him for now.

“We have got a little used to killing games off at half-time. If you look at our games this season, then we have been comfortably in front at half-time for most of them.

“We might have got a little over-confident at times, and we might have taken our foot off the gas a bit. Any manager will tell you that you have to be on it all the time.

“We’ve just had two below-par performances, and it is tough to know exactly why that is, but now the management team just need to instill that confidence that we have been playing with earlier.”

Joynes said he might tweak the formation slightly ahead of their game against 13th-placed Holbrook St Michaels today.
