A Newark gym is preparing to host the biggest show of its kind in the East Midlands, featuring leading professional kickboxers.
Bailey Sugden, of Newark, is involved in an eight-man featherweight tournament, which has a total of £5,000 prize money, at The Road To Glory event being hosted by Suggy’s Gym.

Other fighters involved are: Marcel Adeyemi, The Knowsley Academy, Edgeware; Mo Abdurahman, Exile Gym, Southampton; Federico Beaka Alfaro, The Knowsley Academy, Edgeware; Adrian Maxim, Southend Combat Academy; Matthew Gordon, Powers Martial Arts, Sheffield; Andrew Liddell, Contender Gym, Stockton; Joe Himsworth, Renegades Gym, Stevenage.

Victories in three bouts will see the overall winner claim a £2,000 purse. Both finalists will be rewarded with two-fight deals to appear on the Glory stage.

A total of 24 professionals from leading gyms across the country will be at the show at Grantham’s Meres Leisure Centre on March 11.

Dean Sugden, head coach at Suggy’s Gym and show promoter, said: “The chance to showcase their skills on the Glory stage is the ultimate goal for kickboxers the world over.

“There have been events like this in the US and Brazil, but this is the first time Glory has agreed to officially endorse such a show in the UK.

“It is a massive coup for the region and an unmissable opportunity for our homegrown talent.

“With five more professional bouts on the undercard, every one of which could be the headline fight on any other show, it is guaranteed to be a night both fighters and fans will remember for a long time.”

One of the highlights away from the eight-man tournament will be Kev Ward taking on Jamie Bates in a -80kg catchweight clash, with the winner being awarded a two-fight Glory contract.

There will be an all-Newark battle in a middleweight -85kg bout when Suggy’s Gym fighter Jay Chadburn takes on Spirit Dojo, Nottingham fighter Jack Layton, who is based in Newark.

Doors open at 6pm, with the first bell at 6.45pm. All gold and silver ringside seats are sold out but unreserved tiered and balcony tickets, priced £35, are available from Suggy’s Gym, 49 Castlegate, Newark, or by calling 01636 605708 or 07816 840920.
