A former Newark Rugby Club player has been called up to the Scotland squad for the upcoming RBS Six Nations Championship.
Glasgow Warriors lock Tom Ryder, 26, has been added to the Scottish squad for the first two games of the tournament after Sale Sharks’ Fraser McKenzie injured his arm.

If selected, Ryder could make his Scotland debut in their group opener against England at Murrayfield on Saturday, February 5.

Ryder, who qualifies for Scotland through his Glaswegian father, Paul, joined Glasgow Warriors from English Premiership outfit Saracens on a two-month loan in August 2010 before making the switch permanent.

Ryder (right) who spent his youth career at Newark Rugby Club, has since become a key member of the Glasgow front eight, making 29 appearances in the RaboDirect PRO12 and a further six in the Heineken Cup.

The former Minster School, Southwell, pupil helped Scotland A achieve a 100% record in 2010-11, impressing in wins over USA Eagles and Italy A.

Speaking to www.glasgowwar riors.org Ryder said: “I’m proud to have received the call-up.

“I’m looking forward to joining up with the rest of the Scotland squad, putting in a lot of hard work and challenging for a place.”

Scotland head coach Andy Robinson said: “It’s a blow for Fraser but I’ve always stressed the importance of performing on Scotland A duty and consistently for your club. Tom has done this and deserves this chance.”

Newark Rugby Club chairman Andy Statham said: “The club is very proud of his acheivements. We want to congratulate a great character of the game, who still has very strong links with our club.

“We had him from a very young age all the way up to the age of 18 and even when he was playing in the mini- section we could tell he had what it takes to become a real star in this sport.”
