The council’s Grant Aid Sports Fund has given £24,190 to 16 sports clubs.

The money will help them to support schemes aimed at increasing participation and recruiting or developing coaches and volunteers over the next two years.

A further £17,600 is being awarded to 44 of the county’s most talented athletes to cover a variety of expenses over the next 12 months, including specialist coaching, entry fees, conditioning and equipment.

All recipients of the £400 talented athlete grants have represented their country or are ranked in the top five nationally for their age group.

Newark Castle Cycling Club were the sole club recipients from the Newark and Sherwood district.

It received £1,940 to improve coaching, participation and volunteering.

Fencing star Ed Howlett, of Farndon, was one of the recipients of the £400 talented athletes grants, after representing Great Britain at multiple tournaments last year.

Also receiving funding was ten-year-old Phoenix Weir, of Bingham, who is a rising star on the junior tennis scene.

Mrs Joyce Bosnjak, chairman of the grant aid sub-committee, said: “The county council has a proud record of supporting both sports clubs and individuals over many years.

“This has contributed towards the amazing success enjoyed by Nottinghamshire’s sportsmen, women and teams in recent times. Our sports funding is a continuation of that.

“We are fortunate to have many superb clubs throughout the county.

“We can support them to create even more chances for people of all abilities to take part in sport at a grassroots level, as well as improving coaching and provide rewarding opportunities to volunteer.”
