After the success of their Happy Yellow Hafla 2 last year, Newark dance group Cobra Mystique is staging a charity night at a new venue, the Grove School’s Lilley and Stone site.

The event, on September 30, promises to be bigger and better than last year’s hafla (party) when more £1,000 was raised for the Newark and Nottinghamshire Child Bereavement and Loss Centre, Sue’s Place and Caudwell House, Southwell, a care home for children with disabilities.

Sue’s Place will again benefit, along with Help For Heroes.

One of the organisers, Mrs Glennis Wood, of Balderton, said belly dancers from all over the region would be performing to music with a myths and legends theme.

Members of Cobra Mystique, who meet on Wednesday evenings at the school, will dance an Egyptian-style routine.

There will be other interpretations of the theme from visiting dancers including Lapis Lazuli, Bex Priest, Dawn O’Brien, Sirens, Persian Dance Troupe and Queen Cobra.

The evening will showcase the various styles of belly dancing, by both groups and individuals, and, it is hoped, will inspire others to give it a try.

“We are always keen to welcome new members,” said Mrs Wood.

Cobra Mystique is organising the event with the help of fellow belly dancer Sue Allen, of Nottingham. They have support from the owners of The Greek Steakhouse, Castlegate, where Cobra Mystique members regularly perform.

As well as dancing, the hafla will feature a souq with an array of stalls, a fancy dress competition, and a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

The event costs £5 for adults or £3 for concessions and performers. Entrance is free for under-fives. It starts at 7.30pm. †

Anyone wanting to donate raffle prizes can contact Mrs Wood on 01636 688097.
