Robert Curtis Smith

One of Newark's long serving magistrates and charity volunteers, Mrs Ann Hine, has died, aged 81. A funeral service for Mrs Hine, of The Avenue, Newark, takes place at Newark Parish Church on Monday followed by private cremation. The service will be taken by the Rector of Newark, the Rev Vivian Enever. Mrs Hine, ne Burgass, was born into one of Nottingham's commercial families whose family firm, Spray and Burgass, was a dyeing and finishing business. Her father, Lieutenant D. A. Burgass, was killed in the second world war and she moved with her mother to Seacroft, Skegness. Mrs Hine attended Skegness Grammar School and completed her education at Radbrook College in Shrewsbury. She served as a matron at a boys' preparatory school in Woodhall Spa. She became engaged to Dr Denys Hine just before he became Newark's Coronation Mayor in 1953 and the couple were married at Newark Parish Church the following year after his term of office ended. They began married life at The Ivies, Cartergate, at which time the GP surgeries were attached to the house. Their four children were born there. The family moved to The Firs, London Road, in 1964 after the erection of purpose-built surgeries on Lombard Street. Mrs Hine and her husband moved to The Avenue in 1986. Dr Hine died in 1989. Mrs Hine was a magistrate for almost 30 years, serving on the Newark and Southwell Bench. She was chairman of the juvenile bench for ten years and a member of the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee, which makes recommendations on the appointment of new magistrates. She was chairman of Millbank Red Cross Residential Home in Newark for ten years; a founder member of Newark Inner Wheel Club, serving as its president three times, and was a volunteer at Newark Hospital for many years. Mrs Hine was a trustee of several charities. She was a Trent Navigation Commissioner and a committee member of the Newark Cancer Research Campaign. She was also vice-chairman of the Women's Advisory Committee for the Newark division of the Conservative Party, and a committee member of the Beacon Ward Conservatives. Her voluntary work included delivering meals on wheels with the WRVS and helping with the Newark and District Talking Newspaper. She leaves her four children, Mrs Deborah Hutchinson, Mr Charles Hine, Mr Edward Hine and Mr Andrew Hine, and grandsons Piers and Jack.
