A FORMER president of the Newark and District Association of Tradesmen has died at the age of 84. Mr Wilfred Gelsthorpe, formerly of Rivermead, Newark, and lately of Dartford, Kent, having moved there with his wife, Wanda, almost two years ago to be nearer their oldest daughter, died on October 27 after a long illness. Born in Newark on January 16, 1927, he was a Christ Church choirboy, Boy Scout, bandsman, family butcher and, in later years, a senior accounts clerk at Hoveringham Gravel Company. Mr Gelsthorpe was also a leading light in the Newark and District Wine Circle and was widely known as a keen competitor in local garden produce competitions. Until his mid-70s, Mr Gelsthorpe was an active garden volunteer ? helping the elderly in particular. He is deeply mourned by his wife, Wanda, three children, Yvonne, Loraine and Malcolm, as well as Paul and Brenda, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
