Restoration Project

Preserving our past

Our team of volunteers' have been carefully scanning old negatives from the Newark Advertiser photo archives, some dating back 60 years ago.

Due to the age of the negatives they are beginning to get damaged/corroded and in desperate need to be digitalized to preserve them, some of the negatives have been left unscathed but many need restoration.

Restoration process

Each negative is scanned by a special negative scanner then saved and labelled digitally, some restoration may be needed eg: sharpen, lighten etc..

Other negatives need more work these negative may have worn over time and/or the chemicals have corroded the negatives over time. These can then be washed with water and dried, this will remove any excess paper and chemical build up.

After the negatives have been washed it is then possible to scan it and repair further damage using Photoshop then the image is ready to be stored with the rest.

Just some of the negatives in storage

There are a lot of negatives to be saved and digitalized and we need people to help.

If you would be interested in saving the history of Newark and surrounding areas please contact Marie Wilson (photographic) or Damien Pepper (website).

You don’t need to be computer literate and training will be provided.
